The span of control refers to the number of subordinates immediately reporting to its superior official.

If a manager has five subordinates, the span of control is five.

Factors influence the span of control:

ü Manager’s capabilities

ü The nature of manager’s workload

ü Nature of the task (routine, repetitive or similar)

ü The geographical dispersion of subordinates
